RELEVANCE OF LINNAEUS IN TODAY’S WORLD

I agree with Linnaeus’ maxim stating that “All excess is harmful”. Indiscriminate felling of trees results not only in the destruction of the natural habitats of animals and other living things but also disturbs the climate resulting in freak weather which may cause natural disasters like typhoons, tornadoes and tsunamis. Excessive industrialization has resulted in global warming which threatens the future of our planet. There is diversity in nature and certain areas are blessed with abundant trees, rainfall and other flora and fauna while certain areas have a different climate. I agree that “Nature always compensates for a disadvantage by an advantage elsewhere”. When Carl Linnaeus went to Lapland, which is a very cold place, he saw reindeers which adapt to that harsh climate and also provide for the needs like food, clothing and transportation for the people living there. In other places, such as deserts, extreme heat and scarcity of water make them uninhabitable. But the camel and the cactus plant adapt to this condition and an oasis is created in the middle of the wilderness, with fresh water and plants, which is indeed a miracle of nature. This supports the maxim of Carl Linnaeus. All forms of life like plants, animals and humans have been created to share this planet and maintain its ecological balance. But human beings, in their greed and quest for modernization, have disturbed this balance. We are only to be blamed for dumping waste, chemicals, sewage into the rivers making it non drinkable and even unsafe for contact. We have changed forests (which like our lungs provide pure air to us) into farmland and expand our cities. This leads to extinction of animals, causes landslides, floods and threatens all forms of life. Life is precious and we must preserve it by maintaining its ecological harmony and balance.

[WINK][HEART] Dear Shalakha Sanalkumar: I like your work very much.

Asia appeals to many westerners because they have no idea what is happening here.
    The reverse is also true.

It is clear that you know very little about us here. Shalakha Sanalkumar's essay is about the Relevance of Linnaeus in Today's World, and not about Asia appealing the Westerners. Your comment is noisy, judgmental and out of place here: it adds nothing to the ecological aspects to which Shalakha refers in her essay.

Shalaka’s article is more than what it seems like…..the best thing about the article is its simplicity. This is an article for a person who is not aware of the ecological damage going on AND also for the protestors of every construction etc claiming they are protecting the environment.
What I like about her article is the emphasis on balance….. which is the key….. Development, construction and industrialization are not bad if the environment is taken care with all this…..
I too agree with Linnaeus’ maxim stating that “All excess is harmful”.

The article becomes more striking and profound when one gathers that this is written by a young school going mind…..

GOOD WORK …… like to read more from you

[WINK] Today two students of MGIS, Shalakha and Rebecca, have each received one of my paintings thanks to their essays, written "In the Spirit of Linnaeus." In addition, two other works--"Curious Cherries and "The Curiosity of the Cherries"--were given to Mrs. Beena Bhardwaj, as a gift to the MGIS library. All such works belong to the "Inner Constellations" (see article at akermariano.blogster.com).

Mariano, this is also a very good essay. I like the emphasis in harmony and balance, key to every live-being's health. So.. who were the winners of the contest..? We haven't read here Rebecca's essay I think.. And..... what can I do to recieve one of your paintings????????????? [LOL] gab [WINK][HEART]

[SMILE] There are four winners (see the post Contest: Best Entries). They have received prizes given by the Embassy of Sweden in Manila. Three other prizes (i.e., four of my paintings) have been given to some members of the Mahatma Gandhi International School. Two of its students, Shalakha and Rebecca, have each received one of my paintings thanks to their essays; two other works have been given to Mrs. Beena Bhardwaj, as a gift to the MGIS library. Such works are part of my "Inner Constellations" (akermariano.blogster.com).

You'll find Rebekah's essay included in the post "Repercussion" (linnaeus.blogster.com).

The essays of Shalakha and Rebekah on Ecology are very good.

    Thanks for your comments. [HEART]

Ok. So the four essays that are posted altogether, those are the four winners, and Shalahka and Rebecca are "other winners", may be "your winners..?" gab..
  • akermariano said 1 years ago
[LOL] You are right. For four are the winners who have been selected and prized by the Linnaeus' Competition Jury. Yet, there are three other, so to call them, winners. True, they are extraordinary cases. My initiative was to give special prizes to Shalakha, Rebecca and Mrs. Beena. In the case of the girls, their essays are remarkable (yet they arrived late). Concerning Mrs. Beena, I think she is both an admirable teacher and an exemplar human being. Thus, my idea was to give an artistic token of appreciation to each of them, for I thought the three of them deserved it. That's why I've given some of my pictures to them.
